Millennial Voters May Not Vote for Best Economic Candidate

millennial-vote

The 2016 election may seem far away, but we know better. With the first mainstream candidates announcing their bids for the 2016 presidential nomination, we decided to find out where millennials stand early in the game.

GenFKD polled U.S. residents from April 7 through April 12 on their 2016 voting sentiments. According the our three-question survey, Democratic potential Hillary Clinton is off to a strong start within the millennial cohort. Approximately 40 percent of respondents aged 18 to 35 plan to vote for Clinton, with Republican Rand Paul coming in a strong second with 17 percent of the millennial vote.

We also asked which prospective candidate respondents felt would best handle the economy, as we’re concerned about how our generation is able to find a job and handle their finances. This is where Clinton lost her substantial lead, chosen only by 31 percent of respondents, while Rand Paul held steady at 17 percent. A significant 14 percent of respondents preferred Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has repeatedly denied any plans to run in the 2016 election.

The poll also identified a legion of potentially inactive respondents. Nearly 18 percent were undecided on which candidate they preferred, or preferred a candidate outside of the race’s current frontrunners. While some respondents cited apathy towards the political process, while others wrote in a different candidate tended to be more conservative: many chose Libertarian candidates such as Ben Carson and Paul Ryan.

The poll also included Bernie Sanders, a United States Senator from Vermont, Vice President Joe Biden, Texas Senator and presidential candidate Ted Cruz, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Scott Walker, the current Governor of Wisconsin. As the 2016 election evolves and more candidates announce their bid, we plan to publish updated surveys.

Our Take

The distribution makes a lot of sense when you consider that the Republican primary field still looks so crowded, while the Democratic vote has been assumed shorn up for some time by Clinton.

As the 2016 election approaches, we hope to keep important economic issues at the forefront of millennials’ minds. Stay tuned to GenFKD for updated polls and more economic coverage throughout the campaign season.
