Gabrielle Union in Deliver Us from Eva displayed real-life struggles educated women experience when looking for a male partner. An early-2003 film, the plot still resonates with the professional women’s dilemma — finding another educated individual or to date outside the pool.

No desire for smart women

A study at the University of Buffalo presented two major findings in male desire for intelligent women. The analysis revealed that men were only attracted to smart women on paper, but when an intelligent female subject was placed with them (in close range), they didn’t prefer her at all. The rejection was not based on looks, but rather her aptitude — signifying that men might feel threatened.

Shortage of male graduates

There’s a lack of men enrolling in colleges across the nation. In fall 2014, women attending four-year institutions made up 55 percent of undergraduates in the U.S. Many males are opting for entrepreneur career choices that provide the possibility for success without a degree. Trade schools with lower tuition fees has been an option on the rise, as men can graduate in half the time at half the cost. A decreasing ratio of male to female college graduates means women may need to consider other options.

Dating outside your pool

Charreah Jackson, ESSENCE senior editor said dating outside of your norm can provide success. As there aren’t any statistics about women and dating types, we can assume that everyone has one. Most of the time, people are unlikely to date someone less educated than them. Yet, limitations pertaining to ethnicity, religion, career and body type may be the things hindering your chances at love. Meeting an amazing guy who doesn’t check one of your boxes isn’t you lowering your standards, you’re only widening your market of potential suitors. Remember there isn’t a universal image of love. If you feel it, then that’s all you need to think about.

Takeaway

There are many factors that can contribute to why professional women feel a lack of support or accessibility to partners when dating. As it’s difficult for anyone, finding the right person takes time and patience. Removing barriers and allowing individuals who are truly interested will provide the best results when on the hunt.
