GenFKD is excited to announce that it is among the 15 finalists selected to attend boot camps where they will receive mentoring, education, peer support and networking.
The Points of Light Civic Accelerator is pioneering a model for investing in social ventures, with the goal of increasing workforce success for youth in the Detroit and the Great Lakes region. This model neatly aligns with GenFKD’s mission to prepare students to thrive in the 21st century through on-campus skill development programs.
Executive Director and Co-Founder Justin Dent believes that this program will yield high dividends for the three-year-old organization that addresses shortcomings of today’s educational model for a new digital economy.
“It is our fundamental belief that the higher education system is best equipped to prevent today’s socioeconomic inequalities from defining our future,” Dent said. “In recent months, we’ve pivoted our organization to one creating the skills-based education desperately needed to create the leaders of the future economy. We’re excited to be part of a group that is actively creating an economy that ensures equal access of opportunity to all.”
GenFKD currently has 26 fellows who are running financial literacy programs on college campuses across the country, some of which are already active in the Great Lakes area.
Points of Light’s rigorous mentorship program aims to engage in capacity building with social ventures and improve outcomes for disconnected youth. Leveraging the leadership and financial support of notable companies like Ford Motor Company and PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accelerator will offer the most promising ventures a $50,000 at the end of the program.
“This program opens a window of opportunity for GenFKD to explore a wide range of solutions for engaging disenfranchised millennials, and to ensure educational success and economic empowerment,” said Anna Feldman, GenFKD’s Education Strategist and a recent graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. “We will use this program to rigorously test and refine our curriculum with the help of these impressive organizational leaders so that we can generate the most impact for our students.”
