How can exercise affect business?

Exercise and eating right, according to Jen Gottlieb, a fitness and lifestyle entrepreneur who created The 360 Shift, “is the secret weapon to building a successful business and making more money in your business.” Because working out improves the blood flow to the brain — or, as Gottlieb puts it, “synaptic plasticity,” — it leads to greater productivity as well as greater decision-making and happiness, too. “This is science-based,” she said. “When you are working out, you are more confident, and it is proven to make you more money.”

What type of exercise should we do?

Gottlieb maintained that it all depends on what your goals are: “Just do what you love. If you love Crossfit then do Crossfit. If you love weightlifting then do weightlifting. Do what is going to make you go do it.” For weight loss, however, Gottlieb would recommend high-intensity interval training (HIIT). “The more intense the better … And [just one note],” Gottlieb added, “You can never out-exercise a bad diet.”

Gottlieb’s battle with body dysmorphia

Gottlieb became a personal trainer, competed in a workout competition, and having an unhealthy mindset toward these things, Gottlieb said, contributed to an unhealthy style of eating. But soon after this period of her start out, Gottlieb decided that “[she] wanted to be the best possible person that [she] can be.” She decided to start using working out and eating right “to fuel [her] body rather than to care about what [her] body looks like.” Besides, when you workout to feel good, Gottlieb found, you actually end up looking the best you have ever looked, too. “Better than when I was competing. Better than when I had an eating disorder.”

21 days

Bold Business co-host Chanel George asked Gottlieb about her entrepreneurial program wherein she discusses the possibilities of 21 days of healthy living, and how “time management is key” to the concept. Gottlieb replied that, because she works with a lot of busy people, they want results fast. People who “don’t have a minute for exercise.” With 21 Days, Gottlieb recommended eating “a completely clean diet. Healthy fats, lean proteins and vegetables.”

Takeaway

It is all about making a mindset shift, Gottlieb said. “Mindset is the first thing.” You need to wake up every day and decide to “own your choices,” she said. Switching your mindset from “I have to work out to I get to work out” is key, Gottlieb concluded.
