Summer is officially here. No more last-minute cramming for exams, stressing about research papers and being buried under textbooks. It’s time for a break from the real world. Now that travel is back for 2021, a lot of us are itching to GO. Unfortunately, most of us can’t afford a tropical vacation or cruise, and it’s too late to save a bunch of money for an impromptu cross-country road trip. Summer vacations don’t have to break the bank, and you don’t need to go to an exotic location to have fun. Make your plans around one of the following cheap summer trip ideas.

1. Camping

Relax! If living in a tent, sleeping on the ground and cowering in fear of bears isn’t your thing, camping can still be the trip for you. Camping can simply mean going to a state park and renting a cabin while still having access to running water and air conditioning.

Whatever forms camping may take for you, one thing is certain: It’s one of the cheapest ways to get away, especially if you or someone you know has the equipment. There’s no better trip to take if you love the outdoors and want to get into a little nature. You can enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, grilling by the fire and more.

2. Staycation

Let’s get past what a “staycation” means to most people. It doesn’t have to involve staying at your place all day, being bored to tears. Instead, it could mean staying at a hotel, B&B or rental nearby, exploring things you haven’t had the chance to.

The closer you stay to home, the less money you’re likely to spend on travel. However, that doesn’t mean it has to be ordinary. Since your transportation costs will be less, you might have more money to splurge on a luxury hotel or dinner spot. If you enjoy relaxing and lounging at a pool, this could be a great getaway for you.

3. Home exchange or house sit

If you own a home or have an adventurous family that wouldn’t mind trying a home exchange, this is a great opportunity to travel for less. You don’t have to worry about paying for lodging, and you get access to an entire house in exchange for offering up your own.

If that’s not up your alley, you can offer to house sit for someone. There are quite a few websites out there that match house sitters with homeowners who need the service. But, whether you stay local or not, you’re still getting out of your normal routine!

4. Staying with family or friends

Take the opportunity to visit the aunt and uncle living in Utah you never get to see. See if they would be willing to house you for a week. You could even offer to pay for groceries or a dinner out as a “thank you.”

In addition to saving on the cost of lodging, your family can show you the highlights of their city, which means you don’t need to deal with the hassle of researching a tourist guide.

5. Day or weekend trip

Summer vacations don’t have to be week-long excursions. If money is a little tight, a day or weekend trip can give you something fun to look forward to and tide you over until you can take a “real” trip.

Look into going somewhere fun with friends within a 2-4 hour drive. You can incorporate any of the above ideas into your day or weekend trip or focus it around an event like a summer music festival. For example, if you live near NYC, you can take a trip to a beach on Long Island or New Jersey, go upstate for mountain scenery or take a ferry to Connecticut.

There are plenty of cheap summer trip ideas, so get creative and start planning!
