Dealing with schmucks isn’t easy, and in the outside world, they can be very common. But what do you do when you have one right in your office?

Jody Foster, psychiatrist and author of “The Schmuck In My Office: How to Deal Effectively with Difficult People at Work,” knows a thing or two about schmucks. For anybody who’s suffering from a plague of office schmucks, Foster has some helpful tips, and they just might save your psyche.

Identifying a schmuck

Pointing out a schmuck isn’t all that difficult, as chances are you’ve already had the misfortune of meeting a schmuck in your everyday life.

However, there are some key characteristics that can help to identify a schmuck. Essentially, Foster identifies a schmuck in your office as somebody who is vexing or irritating you in a certain way. This frustration could understandably lead you to want them to change or alter their behavior.

There are some common types of schmuck personalities that can plague a workplace, such as Narcissus, Flytraps and Robots. These schmucks can undoubtedly serve as an obstacle to your workload and your well-being, so it’s important to know how to deal with them efficiently.

Dealing with schmucks

Having to tailor your own behavior to deal with these characters can definitely be emotionally draining, to say the least. But it’s important to take a step back and understand what’s driving them.

Observing and working on the ways that you interact with workplace schmucks can go a long way. By focusing in on these interactions, you could help to keep some of their features that you don’t like at bay.

Are you the schmuck in your office?

The last chapter of her book outlines the potentially alarming possibility of what you should do if you realize that you’re the schmuck in your office. While this seems like an unfortunate fate, Foster says that you shouldn’t fret, and instead, you should look at the bright side!

Realizing you’re the schmuck in the office is an opportunity for self-improvement, so it’s beneficial to see this as a roadmap for trying to do better for yourself. Self-reflection and awareness are key social skills that are regularly used in the office, so honing those is a great way to achieve self-improvement.

Takeaway

With Foster’s help, dealing with schmucks in your workplace doesn’t have to be tough. Have any more questions about conquering your office? Here’s what not to say to your boss.
