How World War 3 Could Happen

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has demonstrated just how fragile the world order is. But there are several other geopolitical flashpoints that could cause an even bigger global conflict or another world war. Let’s look at the five most likely scenarios for how World War 3 could happen.

China & Taiwan

This remains the most probable scenario for World War 3. Should China invade Taiwan, it would cause a humanitarian crisis in East Asia and wreak havoc on the world economy.

Taiwan produces the majority of the world’s semiconductor chips, which power nearly everything, including cell phones, laptops, cars, airplanes, and medical equipment. Even the U.S. military heavily relies on Taiwan’s semiconductors.

A Chinese invasion would likely propel the United States, Japan, and its European allies to come to Taiwan’s defense. It may very well lead to the end of China’s ruling regime.

Iran & Israel

Iran appears extremely close to developing a nuclear weapon and has repeatedly threatened to attack Israel. Of course, there are religious elements to this conflict. Israel is the world’s sole Jewish nation. Iran, on the other hand, is a majority Shiite nation currently governed by a rapidly anti-Semitic theocratic regime.

A potential conflict between Iran and Israel could spread to the rest of the Middle East. However, due to warming relations with the Arab nations, a good deal of the Sunni Arab world would likely be on Israel’s side. Same would be true with respect to the United States and European nations. Iran’s only real allies are Syria, Palestinian groups and the Shiite terrorist organizations which Iran sponsors.

Iran and Saudi Arabia

In addition to the United States, Israel, and the western world, Iran despises a number of its Sunni Arab neighbors, especially the largest of them all, Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia and Iran have waged proxy wars for years, funding opposing sides in Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Bahrain, among other places. Interestingly, this rivalry has helped to bring together former enemies Saudi Arabia and Israel.

North Korea and South Korea

The communist dictatorship of North Korea and democratic, capitalist South Korea have been at war for nearly 80 years. North Korea is one of the world’s poorest countries and South Korea – the nation that gave us K Pop, Squid Game, Samsung smartphones, and great barbecue – is one of the most advanced nations on Earth.

However, North Korea is supported by China and possesses nuclear weapons that make it an existential threat to US-backed South Korea. A world war could break out should a substantial conflict breakout between the two nations.

India and Pakistan

India and Pakistan are both nuclear-armed nations and, like the Koreans, they have been adversaries since the 1940s. Unlike the situation on the Korean peninsula, however, this conflict is not rooted in economics but religion.

India is a predominantly Hindu nation, whereas Pakistan is a predominantly Muslim nation. India and Pakistan are two of the most populous countries on earth, so this conflict could be a significant geopolitical event.

India and Pakistan are both allies with the U.S. However, Pakistan is steadily growing closer with China, largely because of serval investments that China has made in Pakistan under its “belt and road” initiatives. Meanwhile, India is strengthening its ties with the United States and increasingly views China as an enemy. In fact, India recently banned the Chinese-owned social media platform, Tik Tok, and over 50 other Chinese apps. So this rivalry remains a cause of concern and has the potential to pull in the world’s largest nations.
