Looking to gain real-world financial knowledge and experiences to put on your résumé? With Northwestern Mutual, look no further. Northwestern Mutual is a financial planning and life insurance provider that takes on new interns every year.

Anthony Williams, a financial representative intern who has been with the company for three years, spoke with the director of the internship program about his experiences with Northwestern Mutual on Bold Business’ live show on Tuesday.

The program

The internship program has been in place for the past 50 years, allowing students to obtain the skills they need to succeed in a real-world setting. Interns who shine the most are provided with job offers, and those who aren’t walking away with a killer résumé boost.

Michael Van Grinsven, the director of the internship program, outlined what sets their internship program apart from others. The internship is truly unique because, as Michael describes, the interns aren’t working behind the scenes. Interns get to face clients head on, which means building social skills.

Being able to interact with clients in a work setting is a skill that applies to a very diverse array of fields. Mastering these interactions early on will make these interns assets down the line, wherever they end up.

Overcoming rejection

Financial planning isn’t the only skill interns get to build from their workload. Anthony was able to build a tolerance for the word “no,” a word that undoubtedly shows up in real-life settings.

Whether trying to break into inner circles, making new connections or even just applying for jobs, rejection is a reality that everyone faces. Handling rejection properly is a practical skill that has countless real-world applications, so learning it in an internship setting can strengthen your resolve later on.

Takeaway

As the summer trudges on, so does Northwestern Mutual’s internship program. If building your résumé, gaining real world skills and making an impact are all things that appeal to you, consider applying. After all, these benefits are hard to pass up.
