Post-Grad Life Means Three Years Of Experience

One of the biggest struggles of post-grad life is getting hired. For all those graduating with the class of 2018 with no clue what to do next, you’re not alone. I graduated a year ago and when looking for a job, I was baffled by entry-level jobs that required experience. But there is hope for those looking for jobs. You just have to know what a potential employer is looking for.

What are employers looking for?

While all businesses are different, there are some stock components that make up an ideal candidate. Work-related skills are becoming essential. A 2018 Monster study surveyed employers about the skills they want candidates to have. The top one was social media since social media is utilized by individuals and companies daily. Candidates who can use the sites as well as understand how they work are being sought out to create an online presence for businesses.

Creativity is becoming highly valued as well. A survey from the World Economic Forum discovered that by 2020, creativity will be the third-most important work skill because creativity means the ability to think of a new approach or solution to a job. This fresh way of thinking can positively influence a work environment.

Employers are looking for individuals with a modern approach to business with the ability to utilize social media and provide creative ideas to update working practices.

So what’s the problem?

Even if you are qualified, getting a job is a challenge. Especially since 61 percent of entry-level jobs require at least three years of experience. Three years of experience is pretty hard to get when you are just starting your post-grad life. It also does not make a lot of sense. But there is hope! While many job applications say “three years required”, it is more like a “wish list” for employers. Not everyone will perfectly match the job-hiring “requirements” for the job that they are applying to. So, if you feel like you would be a good fit for the postion, send in your resume. It is easy to get discouraged, but confidence and the willingness to try is better than not submitting an application at all.

Takeaway for post-grad life

Post-grad life is difficult. It is easy to panic when applying for jobs that have stringent requirements for entry-level positions. But by focusing on what skills and experience you do have, rather than getting dismayed by those you don’t, finding a career can be more than manageable. It is better to confidently present yourself and your strong attributes rather than not to not apply at all.
