Sarah Jakes Roberts has decided to use her experiences to help others be free. Through her own story of growing up in the public eye, being pregnant as a teen and overcoming life’s obstacles, Roberts shares a message of hope for women, the Black community, Christians and everyone in between. The daughter of pastor T.D. Jakes sat down to chat with David Grasso on Follow the Profit podcast.
Hope for the future
Roberts is passionate about speaking life into communities everywhere, especially when the pandemic hit. Her Woman Evolve movement knew that women, and especially mothers, would be dealing with new challenges. So, her team began flooding their communities with resources: financial, mental and emotional.
“It’s not just the economic insecurity; it’s generations of economic insecurity,” she told Grasso. “There’s a mentality of oppression that begins to permeate our communities … and we don’t even think that there is a way or a path towards entrepreneurship – a way to climb that ladder.”
So, she believes it’s necessary to “see our brothers, our mothers, our uncle’s creating businesses, whether it’s on the corner with lollipops are having convenience stores or nonprofits within our communities.”
Life after failure
In her New York Times bestseller “Woman Evolve,” Roberts explores the Bible story of Eve. She unpacks a part of Eve that “died” when she ate the forbidden fruit: “her courage, her faith and her ability to stand up for herself.” But Roberts realized that that’s not where the story ended for Eve. Now, this author/businesswoman/media personality is using her own revelation and past life lessons “to show [women] that there’s life after forbidden fruit.”
