Is it possible to be economically prosperous while still protecting the environment? Host David Grasso says, “It’s always the environment that suffers in the end, so we’ve got to change that reality.” This week on Follow the Profit podcast, Grasso chats with EarthX founder Trammell Crow and Future 500 CEO Bill Shireman about the solution.
Economic development doesn’t have to work against environmental development, says Shireman. At the same time, it’s important to recognize that business and the profit motive is a very positive force but can get out of control and move us in deadly directions.
Mentalities are changing
According to these guests, it’s been difficult for Texas politicians to make decisions to winterize the energy system because doing so would acknowledge climate change. The state falls into this problem because a few politicians are not willing to be open to that. What happened was undeniable, and the mentalities are changing. Texans are much more aware of the environment, climate and various degrees of global warming. They produce a lot of clean energy.
Solutions for the environment
“Let’s put our money together to advance solutions and recruit a middle ground of Americans,” says Shireman. “And we’re going to start with the environment. Because that’s the common ground that we literally all stand on.”
Now there is a group of political donors and issue donors coming together to protect the planet. Trammell’s goal is that instead of elections being decided by extremists, elections are decided by people who are problem solvers. He hopes that instead of spending billions of dollars trying to defeat each other, we can work together for solutions.
