Tip Yourself is on a mission to change how we look at tipping.

There are so many situations where tipping is a great way to reward someone for a job well done, like when your barista always makes your latte exactly the way you like it, or when you’ve literally never met a friendlier server in your life. But the concept of tipping yourself for a job well done? That one has really never gone mainstream, and Tip Yourself plans to change that.

Setting up your personal tip jar

Getting started with Tip Yourself is easy, and no, you don’t have to awkwardly set up a real-life tip jar on your desk at work (unless you’re the aforementioned barista with the perfect lattes, in which case do whatever you want as long as you keep the caffeine coming).

All you have to do is open an account, which comes standard with bank-level security, and my personal favorite, absolutely zero fees for deposits or withdrawals. Your money is safe, and it’s all yours whenever you want it.

Tip yo’self

As soon as you’re set up with an account, you can start sending yourself tips for a job well done.

What does that mean?

Well, if you actually made it to 5:30AM bootcamp class this morning, or you didn’t skip your Friday morning lecture, or you’ve crossed every single item off of your to-do list, you deserve props for that. Whenever you do something you’re proud of, you fire up the Tip Yourself app, and you can send yourself $2, $5, $10 or any amount you want as a reward for your hard work.

Those tips stay in your “tip jar,” which is a savings account that you can withdraw from anytime.

Manage your tip jar all on your own

Since Tip Yourself is fully in your control, all the time, you can reward yourself on your own schedule. There are tons of automated savings options out there, but if the idea of having an algorithm manage your money for you is a bit too fast, too soon? Tip Yourself might be your savings sweet spot.

You always have control of when you send a tip, and how much you’re sending. I’m not saying I’m a control freak, but I like the sound of that.

It’s all love

The best part about having to open up the app and send money to your tip jar is that it really makes you notice how often you do seriously awesome things. When you’re in the middle of a stressful semester or a tough week at work, taking time to notice your successes – and tip yourself for them! – can be just the pick-me-up you need.

The Tip Yourself app even comes with a share option, so you can share your reasons for sending yourself a tip with their existing community of tippers. You don’t have to share how much you saved, but reading through a stream of encouraging, positive moments people felt were tip-worthy is maybe the most uplifting thing you can do on your phone.

Other users can even send you props and comments to congratulate you on your tip, and before you say “never read the comments,” trust me: this is a supportive bunch of people. How could they not be, when they’re so focused on the good stuff they’ve been up to?

Tip Yourself is currently only available for iOS, but they’re working on an Android version, so if this sounds like your jam, stay tuned (especially since it’s free).
