TikTok Royalties: App Allegedly Keeps Up to 70% of Donations

TikTok, the popular video-sharing platform that’s been around since 2016, has reportedly been keeping up to 70% of the donations made to refugees through their platform. This information comes from a bombshell report that was published by the BBC. A growing number of people are turning to TikTok in order to appeal for aid, however, it appears that the app may be keeping all of the funds raised on its platform instead of directing them where they were intended.

TikTok is keeping up to 70% of the proceeds from donations made to refugees through their platform.  This information comes from a bombshell report that was published by the BBC. A growing number of people are turning to the video app TikTok in order to appeal for aid. This includes people who are currently living in conflict zones such as Syria and are in need of assistance.

And, according to the BBC report, because TikTok views these donations as gifts, the company is deducting a substantial 70%, or at least up to 70%, of the donations as a fee. It would appear that middlemen connected to China are organizing campaigns to raise money from people in the United Kingdom. According to the report, that’s because the people of the UK are said to have a reputation for being among the most generous donors.

TikTok chimes in

TikTok has stated that it will swiftly implement measures to combat “exploitative begging. The company stated that content of this nature was not permitted on its platform, and it further stated that its commission from the sale of digital gifts was significantly lower than 70%. However, TikTok did not confirm the exact amount in question.

Although a 70% commission is unheard of, Google Play and Apple App stores both charge developers 15%-30% of their earnings to list their apps. So, you should anticipate more revelations about ridiculous royalties, not just from TikTok.
