In the early days of your start-up, it’s natural to want to hang on to your home office, but you might find that you don’t really need it anymore once your company starts growing up. You might be able to save money by working out of a co-working space, or you might just feel like you need the stimulation of being around other people and interacting with potential clients in person more often. Whatever the case may be, here are some ways to tell if it’s time to leave your home office behind.

Working From Home Has Perks

For many entrepreneurs, working from home is an ideal arrangement. There’s no commute, no dress code, and most importantly, no one can tell you when to work or what to do. But if that home office has become cluttered with random files and paperwork, or you’re stuck in your pajamas all day, maybe it’s time to try co-working. Co-working spaces offer perks like free Wi-Fi, shared conference rooms, and community events, which are great for growing businesses. So, if you haven’t considered co-working before, now might be a good time to think about it.

But Co-Working Spaces Are The Next Step

Before you can decide whether co-working spaces are right for you, it’s helpful to look at some of the pros and cons of working from home vs. working in a co-working space. For example, working from home means that you don’t get to enjoy professional networking opportunities or attend social events with other entrepreneurs who could help your business grow. But if you work well on your own and like being able to set your own schedule, then there may be no need to make any changes. When making decisions about where you want to work, it’s important to weigh all of your options carefully.

Find a Good Fit For You

The first thing you’ll want to ask yourself is what kind of space best suits your startup and how many people you need to fit into it. Do you want an open, collaborative environment with multiple workspaces—like a WeWork or Workhouse—or do you prefer something more like an office, with one or two desks and some privacy? You may also want to consider whether you’re looking for a long-term lease or if you just need a temporary workspace while your business grows. If you don’t know where to start, try asking friends who have started businesses before: they might be able to recommend a good place in their area.
